There is a form of self driving electric vehicle, that you don’t get range anxiety with, aren’t just restricted to the few of us that can afford to spend £50,000 on a new car, that poor people should be able to afford, and which don’t involve selling your soul (and giving your hard earned cash to) Mr Musk.
They are called TRAINS. The problem is, there aren’t enough of them. I can’t walk to the station, get on a train and turn up near my destination. Instead I have to drive half an hour, there is no parking at the station, then it takes an hour on the train to get to Manchester, making a total journey time of over an hour and a half. When it SHOULD take 45 minutes by car.
The problem with trains is that they are unionised, that 20th century concept that will ensure they will not be successful, because the unions will do everything they can to obstruct progress.
Secondly, even without the unions, they require money to be spent to expand the network massively and get them convenient for enough people. HS2? I’ll never use it millions of others won’t either, we need a proper rail network thats an easy walk or taxi ride away from everyone.
At the moment, cars give the government loads of money through the 50% tax on petrol and diesel. If it were me I would consider taking some of this cash and building a decent rail network that I can rent out to train companies, to help ensure a low emission (all electric train) future, before its too late.
Am I the only one who thinks like this?
