I am very worried about this.
I don’t think all the extra power and then all the electronics to try to make things safe is the way forward.
We could have cars that can do 100mpg, 200mpg, not ones that have 300 or more bhp, then expensive electronic packages to try to make them safe.
Topping it all is the “self driving” option.
I don’t think they will ever be truly self driving but just some kind of hybrid that needs to be monitored. There lies the problem. Studies with airline pilots have found that if the autopilot disengages for some reason, it can take quite a few seconds for the pilot to properly regain control. Why? Because driving is a constant feedback loop, and if you break that loop, it takes a few second to engage again.
I personally have never been happy with partial autopilots, where for example you get help with the elevators and ailerons, but not the rudder or throttle. It breaks that feedback loop and for me feels very unsafe.
So in the event of an emergency or some hazard appearing on the road such as ice, or a baby in a pushchair, if the car doesn’t respond, its way too late, impossible in fact for the driver to be able to take over in time to prevent an accident.
As a motorcyclist I feel very unsafe, having unpredictable cars around me. I don’t think they even test against motorcycles and I’ll bet they don’t test against all the different types of hazards you can find in the real world.
With Audi recently saying they are going to produce a self driving option, I agree with this guy: I hope he succeeds in his mission (552) Here’s what Dan O’Dowd believes is wrong with Tesla’s self-driving software – YouTube.
I don’t think we should have a world where we let billionaires and big companies profit from other peoples lives. Why are we letting these dangerous vehicles on our roads? Politicians getting back handers from manufacturers? This has to stop.
