Book Review: The Geek Manifesto by Mark Henderson

I read this book soon after Thinking Fast and Slow, and understood afterwards that politicians rarely use System 2. They always work off what they think is true (System 1) rather than working things out because lets face it, life is complex, its hard to know some things for sure.

The book gives lots of examples of where more scientific, rather than political thinking could be beneficial, and notes nowhere in the world does politics take into account science adequately.

Also looking to science to cherry pick proof that your policies are working isn’t really very scientific, the book argues that they should base policies on scientific thinking instead.

It covers why science matters, in:-

  1. Politics
  2. Government
  3. Media
  4. Economy
  5. Education
  6. Court
  7. Healthcare
  8. Environment

I think thats just about everywhere, really 🙂

Also on a similar subject which I have read is Factfullness (reviewed elsewhere on this blog), which argues that numbers of useless without context, but we need numbers to help understand the world accurately.
