This is one of the most interesting books I have read. It represents Hans Rosling’s lifes work.
It says that what we know about the world is mostly wrong, based on things we have learnt at school that are now out of date, and also things we see in the media, which makes us believe the world is a worse place than what it actually is. Not only that – our instincts are wrong, in his short quizzes chimps who chose randomly would do better than the majority of people.
There are also a couple of pages (Hans Rosling was a Doctor that was involved in treating Ebola), that are very interesting given the current situation re: Covid-19.
The book covers ten reasons why we are wrong about the world, and why things are better than you think.
It covers:-
- The Gap Instinct
- The Negativity Instinct
- The Straight Line Instinct
- The Fear Instinct
- The Size Instinct
- The Generalization Instinct
- The Destiny Instinct
- The Single Perspective Instinct
- The Blame Instinct
- The Urgency Instinct
Its an easy and interesting read, and also an interesting book if you are interested in psychology or interested in reality and how easily it is to be misled/misunderstand things. How your views right now could be different from reality. He also notes that even activists in the book, while passionate about the thing they are activists about, often don’t understand the reality. It has some good advice on how to avoid getting stuck with your views that might be wrong or out of date.
Overall there is a lot of interesting insight in this book. Highly recommended.
