Book Review: Fat Chance by Dr Robert Lustig

This was the second book I read trying to understand how my weight loss had worked. It is a very informative and although written by a doctor, is very easy to read and understand.
The fundamental point is that if you have high blood sugar, your body makes insulin to counter it, and as a result stores the sugar as fat. If you have low blood sugar, the process REVERSES, i.e. you burn fat. So you will never ever lose weight if you blood sugar is always high.

The problem I have with all of this is that people have been conditioned by adverts to eat low fat and thus high sugar. Its hard to have a conversation because you say “I eat less sugar” and they have read somewhere that too much protein or fat is bad for you so they keep eating the cakes.

This book explains that a balance is right. What is the balance? Read the book and you will be some way to understanding. The author also states that having fat and carbs in the same meal is dangerous and addictive (Macdonalds anyone?).

This was a really interesting read for someone like myself who would like to know how my body works.
