My wife was telling one of her workmates my story how I had lost three and a half stone and was the same weight at nearly 50 as I was when I was 25.
She replied “I’m not doing that, too much protein is dangerous”.
Twenty years ago we were eating about 100 to 150g of carbs per day. Today this is about double due to the amount of processed food available and the fact that food companies when creating new foods need to put a lot of sugar in because this kind of food is dirt cheap and easy to make for them, compared to protein based foods where you normally have to kill something to get the protein.
So if we had half the amount of carbs we must have had a proportionate amount more protein.
I figured that if I just tried to replicate this diet I should lose weight and I did.
This Mens Health article The Truth Behind 5 Food Myths has more information. In truth, what that says about consuming that much protein per day, is for body builders, and it would be very hard to eat that much without eating too much fat and carbs. My view is, don’t take protein supplements, in fact, don’t have processed anything particularly carbs if at all possible. Just be reasonable, and avoid processed sugar where at all possible.
All I tried to do was to lose weight aim for about 50g carbs per day without going hungry, usually aiming for 50g – 100g of protein. I rarely met those targets but at least I tried. I ended up at around 100g of carbs some days, but each day was a new day. At weekends eat what I want it again only go for cake or ice cream occasionally. That’s was it.
From my experience its really hard to eat more than about 50g of protein per day, unless you eat egg whites or more than one steak per day which I definitely did not do. From memory I think the dangerous levels are 200g plus.
