I am usually sceptical at adverts, would much rather work things out for myself.
I have never tried probiotics although I like yoghurt, because it sounded to me too much like health food.
Let me digress. I am a big fan of the scientific method. A scientist is very open, and is the first to admit he/she may be wrong and leaves his/her findings open to the next theory. I don’t know if you like what I am saying or not, but a few hundred years ago we were burning people at the stake because people didn’t know anything and had thier own stupid, irrational theories that were just wrong. So the scientific method is good in my view. Without it progress would not be possible.
A lot of people who push health foods are a bit like politicians and (probably) the people who burnt witches at the stake – their way is right and they aren’t prepared to talk about, or even listen to differing points of view because it might throw up why they are in fact, wrong. Yet they are usually full of themselves and don’t stop trying to push their own views on you.
I thought the probiotic, in particular the Activa ads were a bit like this, so I never tried it because I didn’t want to be as stupid and irrational as the people in the ads.
Anyway, Michael Mosley in the tv series he is currently on, last night told us the truth:
Probiotics might help if you have diaorrea or irritable bowel syndrome but they very quickly get flushed out of your system in any case. There really aren’t any other benefits.
He suggested why not feed the good bacteria you already have, by having porridge for breakfast? It’s cheaper as well.
