Counting Calories

The next thing I did was download a free calorie counter app for my iPhone 4. I downloaded the free DailyBurn (www.dailyburn.com) from the AppStore, set myself up on a low carb diet, and used the food database in this app to tell me how many calories I was eating every day.

My idea was to record what I ate whenever I put something in my mouth, because its very difficult to remember exactly what has been eaten after the event. I just wanted to understand what my percentages of protein, fat and carbs actually were over a period of a few weeks.

I was quite shocked by the results, protein was quite low, fat and carbs were quite high. I was eating 3500 calories on average although some days could be a lot worse. Why were the bad days worse? I didn’t know.
Part of my problem was that not only was I sat in front of a computer all day, I was working from home, with plenty of food available when I went to the kitchen to make a cup of tea. I’d put two stone on within months when I first started working from home.
